This is a simple powerpoint giving names and formulae of ions. Knowledge of these can provide a key to understanding chemistry at GCSE and A level. Print these off, laminate them, and display in a prominent position in a lab. (NB I have corrected the ammonium ion error)

Drag& Drop Functional Group with formulae

This is a variation of my ‘drag and drop functional group’ activity. In this case you drag the structural formula to the correct name of the functional group. If it is correct it will stick, otherwise it won’t. Could be used around the whiteboard as a quick AFL. This is a simple html5 document- simply double click on the html file and it will load in your web browser. (nb because the table is long, you may have to zoom out in your web browser to complete.) ** Please note:** in order to provide a rich interactive experience, my interactive resources are mini-web sites local to your computer. After unzipping, they comprise a folder containing the main .html file and another folder containing the graphic resources and my coding to make the resource work. Double click on the .html file and the resource will work. If, however , you move or delete any of the files from this hierarchy, the resource will not work.

Ionic bonding animation

A simple animation to jazz up ionic bonding a little: covers sodium fluoride, magnesium fluoride and lithium oxide. Short and sweet. Just double click on ionic bonding.html and it will run in your web browser. If it’s too small, just zoom in with browser controls. A preview can be seen at on my web site. Double click on pretty poly(mers).html, and the activity will open in you browser. Simply drag the structure of each monomer to the box next to the name of the polymer. Good AFL around the whiteboard. A paper version is also available. Suitable for GCSE and A level students. Calculating an enthalpy change.

I made a crazy cartoon illustrating the calculation of the enthalpy change from bond enthalpies for the reaction between chlorine and hydrogen. Just for fun really. Note: the youtube version is free.

I made an intertactive widget thingy with multiple choice questions about KS 4 chemistry. Point at the correct answer and click. Instant feedback provided. 20 fun questions. One of my wacky videos illustrating the difference in reactivity of benzene vs phenol in terms of polarising power.

Molnupiravir: exam practice.

Exam boards often take unknown substances and ask students to apply their understanding of chemistry to them. To provide practice answering this type of question, I am developing a series of worksheets with this type of question. The series is called Practicexamquest. Molnupiravir has recently been approved as an anti COVID drug, so is of topical interest. Comprises 7 questions over 2 sides.

I made a clunky cartoon about cracking alkanes with a cheery soundtrack. The idea is for students to write and record the narration… something different to just ‘writing up’ the experiment.
