Mystery Sight Words! Students work out the starting letter of each image and place an alphabet manipulative underneath it to work out the secret word. A great hands-on activity that supports both reading and spelling of high frequency words. Use alphabet manipulatives such as magnetic letters or letters written on milk bottle lids. Alternatively your students could ‘write and wipe’ the letters with a whiteboard marker (laminate first). Students decide what sort of emotion they would like their pirate to have and draw the face accordingly (eg happy, excited, sad, surprised, angry …) If desired, your students could draw a different emotion on two of the templates (same pirate) and then stick them back to back with the craft stick in between. Then they can simply turn the puppet around during their performances to show a different emotion. A ‘Fun with a Ruler’ math/art project that involves drawing parabolic curves (curves that are made by drawing a series of straight lines). This project involves your students ruling straight lines between dots on a template. When they have finished drawing all of the lines they can give their artwork some colour. Alternatively, your students could draw the designs using different coloured pens. Each student completes a piece. Join the pieces together to make an eye-catching display (see image for example). Included: ♦ Student template (2 per page or 1 per page) (black or grey dots) ♦ Example ♦ Instructions ♦ Teacher notes Level of Difficulty: Your students need to be able to use a ruler to draw straight lines between 2 points (the curves are made with straight lines … it’s like magic!). The designs can look more complicated than they actually are. Concentration is required, but the actual process is not difficult. Instructions: Simple, clear, easy-to-follow instructions are provided. One instruction per page (image and a sentence). Display the instructions via a data projector if you have access to one. Otherwise print and enlarge them and/or demonstrate on an enlarged template. Equipment: You need a ruler and a pen(s). Something to colour with (eg coloured pencils, watercolours, felt tip markers, chalk pastels, dye, etc) Size: 13cm x 13cm. Designed on A4 size paper. Discover the mystery sight words by reading them in a mirror. Simply place the word card on the table in front of you and hold a mirror on the line at the top of the card. Look into the mirror and read the word. (Optional: write the word on the worksheet). This is a super-fun, hands-on activity that will keep your students engaged during literacy time. A fun and creative art activity to celebrate Diwali (Deepavali), the Hindu Festival of Lights. ACTIVITY 1 Draw patterns on the hand templates using a black pen/marker/ink (there are lots of images on the internet to get inspiration). Cut out and display on a coloured background. ACTIVITY 2 Draw patterns in the hands of the boy/girl. Colour the rest of the picture. Three different templates provided (boy, girl, unisex).
