In Week 1, pupils will explore 2D and 3D shapes, focusing on identifying, naming, and describing their properties. Activities will include recognising common 2D shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles, and understanding 3D shapes like cubes, cuboids, spheres, and cylinders.
Because i taught this unit after addition and subtraction in term two i’ve named it Week 5, but it’s first week of teaching shape in Year 2.
Pupils will also learn to describe shapes using mathematical vocabulary, such as “sides,” “vertices,” “edges,” and “faces,” and begin to sort shapes based on their properties. Practical tasks, including hands-on exploration with shape manipulatives and sorting activities, will build their understanding. Lessons align with the White Rose Maths Scheme, ensuring structured progression and a strong foundation for geometry skills. Adaptive resources are included to support all learners.

Unit Overview: Yokki and the Parno Gry
This six-week unit, based on Yokki and the Parno Gry, guides pupils through developing key writing skills:
Week 1: Introduction to the story and exploring descriptive language.
Week 2: Crafting descriptions using subordination and coordination.
Week 3: Understanding key features of descriptive writing and making inferences.
Week 4: Oral storytelling, focusing on retelling the story and describing settings.
Week 5: Planning a narrative using the Boxed-Up Method to structure ideas.
Week 6: Writing and completing their narratives, incorporating rich language and refining their work.
The unit includes adaptive worksheets, structured activities, and engaging resources, making it ideal for diverse classrooms. Perfect for developing descriptive and narrative writing skills while fostering creativity.
In Week 6, pupils will bring their narratives to life by completing their stories based on the plans developed in the previous week. They will focus on writing in full sentences, using subordination and coordination to create more complex and engaging narratives. Pupils will incorporate rich descriptive language and key features of storytelling, such as dialogue, to add depth to their characters and settings. Editing and revising will also be introduced, encouraging pupils to refine their work and ensure their narratives are cohesive and captivating. Support resources are included to guide all pupils in achieving their best outcomes.
In Week 5, pupils will focus on narrative writing by planning their own stories inspired by Yokki and the Parno Gry. Using the Boxed-Up Method, they will break their narratives into clear sections, including the introduction, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending. Pupils will draw on their descriptive writing skills to create vivid settings, compelling characters, and engaging plots. Planning activities will ensure pupils structure their ideas effectively, laying the groundwork for a well-developed story. Adaptive templates are provided to support all learners in organising their narratives successfully.

In Week 4, pupils will focus on oral storytelling by retelling the story of Yokki and the Parno Gry. Through structured activities, they will practise sequencing events, using descriptive language to bring the settings to life, and incorporating key story details. Emphasis will be placed on vivid descriptions of settings, inspired by the original text, to build their storytelling confidence. Pupils will then use these skills to collaboratively create and share their own imaginative retellings. Adaptive support is included to ensure all pupils can fully participate and succeed.
In Week 3, pupils will focus on writing detailed descriptions by analysing the key features of descriptive writing, such as sensory language, figurative expressions, and varied sentence structures. They will also practise making inferences from the text to deepen their understanding of the characters and settings, using these insights to enhance their own writing. Activities will encourage pupils to draw conclusions from clues in the story and translate these ideas into their descriptive work. Adaptive tasks are included to ensure all learners can engage meaningfully with the objectives.
This unit focuses on descriptive writing, inspired by the magical storytelling in Yokki and the Parno Gry. Students will develop their skills in crafting vivid imagery using sensory details and rich vocabulary. They will also refine their sentence structure by incorporating subordination (e.g., “although,” “because,” “if”) and coordination (e.g., “and,” “but,” “so”) to create complex and compound sentences.
In Week 2, lessons will include a detailed exploration of the characters and settings, guiding students to describe them vividly. An adaptive worksheet is included to support learners of all levels, ensuring that every student can successfully engage with the task and make progress in their writing.
