Edmund Neville, a persistent plotter against Queen Elizabeth I, earned a unique place in Tower of London history: a two-time escapee. Imprisoned in 1584, he meticulously filed through his window bars and slipped into the night. Recaptured due to the telltale stench of the moat clinging to him, Neville refused to be deterred. Two years later, aided by a rope smuggled in by his devoted wife, he made his second daring escape. Though his freedom was short-lived, Edmund Neville’s audacious escapes cemented his legend as one of the Tower’s most determined and resourceful prisoners.
