The Daring Escape of Lord Nairne (1716) In the aftermath of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, Lord Nairne, a prominent supporter of the deposed House of Stuart, found himself among the many rebels who faced arrest and imprisonment.

Edmund Neville, a persistent plotter against Queen Elizabeth I, earned a unique place in Tower of London history: a two-time escapee. Imprisoned in 1584, he meticulously filed through his window bars and slipped into the night. Recaptured due to the telltale stench of the moat clinging to him, Neville refused to be deterred. Two years later, aided by a rope smuggled in by his devoted wife, he made his second daring escape. Though his freedom was short-lived, Edmund Neville’s audacious escapes cemented his legend as one of the Tower’s most determined and resourceful prisoners.

Ranulf Flambard (1101): A powerful bishop and administrator for William II, Flambard was the first recorded escapee. He used a rope smuggled in a wine cask to climb down from his window.
