During the lesson pupils will:
* Discuss conditions in the Royal Navy and the recruitment problems this would cause in the 17th and 18th Centuries.
* Investigate how the Royal Navy solved recruitment problems through impressment.
* Identify and define key terms such as impressment, two power standard and blue water policy.
* Recap roles of the royal Navy from a previous lesson
* Investigate the work of the HMS Black Joke through primary sources.
* Discuss the key question - Should the Royal Navy be proud of its efforts to suppress the Slave trade?

This lesson introduces pupils to the spying aspect of the Cold War with a particular emphasis on the Cuban Missile Crisis. During the lesson, pupils work in groups to evaluate different scenarios and present courses of action that America could take. In their groups pupils will:
* Give suggestions of the best way to use the U2 spy plane against the USSR
* Analyse spy plane photos of Soviet Missile Sites in Cuba
* Consider different courses of action and advise JFK on what he should do about the missiles.
*Hot-seat a briefing for JFK and what decision he should take.
All resources needed for the lesson are on the power point and I have included brief notes on the slide to advice as to the best way to use them.
I have used this lesson for many years (including during an outstanding observation) with great success.

This is the fifth lesson of a scheme of work in about Medieval Castles.
The focus of the lesson is to have pupils evaluate the different methods used to attack castles.
During the lesson pupils will:
- Use an ISM to develop an initial list of the ways that castles could be attacked.
- Use information to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different methods to attack castles.

This is the third lesson of a scheme of work in about Medieval Castles.
The focus of the lesson is to introduce pupils to Motte and Bailey Castles and to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
During the lesson pupils will:
- Analyse an ISM showing the distribution of Castles across England.
- Identify the reasons why William the Conqueror needed to build castles when he became king.
- Complete a role playing activity where pupils act as agents of a Saxon chief who wants to start a rebellion against William. During this activity pupils will create an image of a Motte and Bailey Castle, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and plan an attack on it.
- Hot seating activity: One pupil will play the Saxon chief and evaluate the plans of attack developed by other pupils.

This lesson introduces Germany after the First World War and the problems they were facing during the early 1920s. The lesson is designed as an introduction to the new Edexcel 9 - 1 History unit Wiemar and Nazi Germany 1918 - 1939 but could easily be adapted for other exam boards or key stages.

- Analyse and infer from casualty figures for the Central Powers during the First World War.
