The Deanery Church of England High School is looking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher to raise standards across the school through ensuring outstanding pastoral care for pupils.
The Deanery Church of England High School is an 11-18 school at the heart of the local community in Wigan. We are a successful and heavily oversubscribed school of around 1450 pupils with a thriving and growing Sixth Form.
Serving the Diocese of Liverpool and the parishes of the Wigan Deanery, we aim to provide an education for life, enabling all of our community to flourish and live life to the full. Following the promotion of our current Deputy Head (Pastoral), we now have a truly exciting opportunity to join us in this high-profile Senior Leadership position to lead pastoral delivery and innovation.
You will lead the provision of pastoral care throughout the school, ensuring the emotional, physical and intellectual wellbeing of the whole pupil body.
The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be required to inspire confidence amongst pupils, parents and the pastoral team. A strategic thinker, this role will shape and develop a coherent and innovative whole-school pastoral curriculum. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and must be committed to the school’s ethos, aims and strategic direction.
Although we would prefer to appoint for January 2025, we would consider delaying the appointment to September 2025 for the right candidate.

Who are we?
A school with a church foundation has existed on this site for 89 years. In 1932, All Saints Senior Church School was founded for ‘the nurture of the hearts and minds of children’ in Wigan. In 1971, All Saints’ School closed to allow the formation of a new high school. For the last 51 years, The Deanery Church of England High School has honoured that rich legacy and has been a beacon of distinctive Christian education for generations.
Our school sits at the heart of Wigan and serves young people and families from every parish of the town.

We have around 150 staff in total who are pivotal to our success. The team is welcoming and friendly; we have a Staff Council who meet to discuss ideas about how we can support each other and make sure that our staff are well looked after. Where are we?
Wigan is conveniently located between Manchester and Liverpool, both cities being less than an hour’s drive away. The town lies at the heart of the regional motorway network, which affords quick and easy access to the rest of the UK via an extensive road network. Its rail links are exceptional. We are only a 30-minute drive away from Warrington, Bolton and Leigh. The school itself is situated in the heart of Wigan town centre, directly opposite the bus station and only a 10-minute walk away from both main railway stations.
