UWCSEA Dover seeks to hire a dynamic and experienced Director of Activities and Sports to continue the development of an outstanding Activities Programme and to facilitate the coordination and further development of Sports at the College.

This role will be accountable for the development, leadership and management of the Campus Activities programme. The position is a significant leadership role and the incumbent will be a member of the extended Dover Leadership Team (DLT). This role will engage the leadership team for Dover Campus Activities and Sports, collaborate with school principals and build meaningful partnerships with third party providers. It will also involve significant liaison with the Singapore community and the South East Asian International schools community.

There will be a small Physical Education teaching commitment associated with the role. 

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Coordinate all aspects of the activity programme within the school to ensure that all students have access to a broad and balanced programme.
  • Lead, design, and implement the K-12 Activity Programme at UWCSEA Dover.
  • Assist the School Leadership Teams in developing strategic plans and policies for activities and ensure DLT are engaged in discussions of developments with the programme.
  • Develop the community activity programmes (external and internal programmes), building close connections with the local Singapore community and developing participation, opportunity, and access.
  • Take the lead role in liaison with the COO team, for the development and maintenance of compliance in both financial and operational areas of the Activities programme.
  • Member of the Extended Dover Leadership Team.

Leading Learning:

  • Managing curriculum planning, delivery, monitoring, and assessment of Activities programmes.
  • Monitor student involvement in Activities together with parent and student satisfaction surveys.
  • Plan and oversee the implementation of high-quality professional development for all. Develop and embed standards of inclusivity and excellence in all team members, ensuring Performance Management/PLP is a development tool for all.
  • Work with Heads of Service to provide data supporting DLT in ensuring all academic staff contribute to the Activity and Service elements of the Learning Programme in line with College expectations.

Leading Teams:

  • Take overall responsibility for recruitment, induction, safeguarding, and safety within the Activities team. Liaise with the Outdoor Education and Service Teams to develop consistent approaches towards external providers.
  • Line manages the School Activities and Sports coordinators, Community Activity Programme coordinator; Heads of Tennis, Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and Climbing, ensuring strategic planning and shared goals.
  • Build a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive team culture.

Leading Self and Others:

  • Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of students and staff across the full activity programme and activities facilities.
  • Liaise with Heads of Dance, Drama, and Music in relation to their interface with the Activities programme, maintaining strong representation of all areas and ensuring proper scheduling, to achieve the “best fit” possible when scheduling multiple events in a busy calendar and reviewing the cumulative demands on individual students to ensure a balanced experience.

Operational Leadership:

  • Oversee the organisation of fixtures for Representative Sports at the College.
  • Oversee the administration of the Activities Programme, ensuring breadth and depth of choice, in partnership with the Activities Manager.
  • Oversee the NYAA programme in partnership with the NYAA coordinator.
  • Oversee the MUN programme in partnership with the MUN coordinator.
  • Administer and develop the Community Activities programme and the Holiday Activities Programme, including residential camps at holiday times.
  • Be responsible for the compilation and oversight of planning and timetabling of the activities programme in collaboration with Activities and Sports leaders.
  • Implement existing policies and develop new ones where necessary, focusing on staffing, supervision, health and safety, risk assessment, and student safeguarding.
  • Liaise with the Health and Safety team to ensure activity venues are safe and comply with safety recommendations.
  • Provide financial governance for setting and monitoring activity budgets. Liaise with the COO team to deliver effective tracking and resource monitoring.
  • Oversee the maintenance of activity resources, venues, and equipment.
  • Monitor, review, and improve the CIMS in liaison with the Director of ICT.
  • Monitor and further develop rental income from external providers.
  • Oversee the provision of information for students, parents and staff


Person Specifications 

Qualifications

  • Qualified teacher and have a minimum tertiary level qualification at degree level

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience as Head of Activities or a similar role
  • In-depth understanding of activities & sports budgeting including capital and operational cost projection and review systems
  • Broad and comprehensive understanding of sports training systems, theories and practices
  • Understanding and application safeguarding procedures and policies in a school setting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of a variety of methods / systems of collecting data to measure the effectiveness of activities & sports programmes
  • Comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles of how best to communicate to a school and wider community, maximising both College and Activities specific communications systems.

UWCSEA's learning programme and curriculum

Our UWCSEA learning programme is based around five interlinking elements. The rigorous academics, combined with a unique outdoor education programme, extensive activities and meaningful service, are underpinned by a supportive pastoral care programme. Students participate in all five elements of the programme throughout their time at the College, and the elements will have varying importance at different times in their journey through UWCSEA.

The learning programme delivers UWCSEA's unique, concept-based curriculum which has been articulated for each element of the learning programme across K-12. This means that from K1 to Grade 12, each curriculum area (or subject) has standards, which identify key concepts that underpin that curriculum area. These standards are applied at all grade levels and build naturally in complexity through the Infant, Junior, Middle and High Schools, culminating in the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12.

In turn, each standard has conceptual understandings that describe what a student should understand as a result of studying a particular content area. They are statements of understanding that are appropriate to a student’s developmental stage, and build towards the standard.

Benchmarks are then attached to each conceptual understanding. The benchmarks describe what a student should know, understand or be able to do at each stage of their learning in each subject. These benchmarks are what our teachers assess to ensure that students are reaching the conceptual understanding and are working towards the standards.

In the High School, the standards, conceptual understandings and benchmarks specifically take into account the requirements of external examining bodies that set the (I)GCSE and IB Diploma examinations that students sit at the end of Grade 10 and Grade 12.

Educating for a better world

The academic curriculum aims to develop the specific conceptual understandings necessary to build Peace and a Sustainable Future. These are derived from UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development Goals for and through a collaboration with our educational partners the Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Along with the skills and qualities of our Learner Profile many of these concepts are reinforced through linkages to the other four elements of our Leaning Programme. You can find out more here.

Results

UWCSEA has outstanding IB Diploma results. In May 2019, our cohort of 561 students achieved an average IB Diploma score of 36.6—the worldwide average was 29.8 (May 2018). Staff and structure

Each campus has its own Campus Leadership team and academic and administrative staff to support the delivery of UWCSEA’s world-class education. Each campus is divided into Schools (Primary, Middle and High). Each School is managed by a Principal, assisted by Vice Principals and Heads of Grade or Department.

The College President oversees the work of both campuses in partnership with the senior leadership team, the learning leadership team and their teams of senior managers on each campus. The campuses have the same Board of Governors.

The Dover Campus has 3,132 day and boarding students (K-12) and employs 319 teaching and 336 support staff. The East Campus has 2,843 day and boarding students (K-12) and  employs 288 teaching staff and 268 support staff.

The boarding houses on both campuses are supported by live-in teaching staff and offer a unique opportunity for a city-based residential boarding programme to students aged 14-18 years - 172 students on Dover and 154 students on East.

Teachers are expected to contribute wholeheartedly to the provision of all elements of this programme both inside and outside the formal academic curriculum. All teachers run activities or service projects in addition to their teaching, which can include supporting the College's range of sporting, dramatic and musical performances, as well as providing support for the extensive expeditions programme.

Professional life and development opportunities

UWCSEA aims to provide an exceptional professional experience to its teachers and to be an Employer of Choice. The UWCSEA benefits package includes a competitive salary, contribution towards housing, medical insurance, a service gratuity (set at 20 percent of gross salary at the end of each year), recruitment and repatriation flights and biennial leave passages.

We offer a wide range of professional development opportunities. Teachers are expected to commit to three professional development days scheduled each year, and are provided many additional opportunities for professional learning through our the extensive Professional Development Programme.

We have a highly experienced teaching faculty who provide excellent opportunities for peer-to-peer learning. Among the full-time teaching staff, we have large numbers of IB PYP Trainers, IB MYP workshop leaders, IB DP workshop leaders and IB DP Examiners or Moderators, allowing us to run in-house workshops and seminars.

Teachers attend workshops or seminars in the region, and at the College’s Centre for Professional Learning. This in-house Centre allows UWCSEA teachers to attend a range of educational conferences and other events that draw teachers from across the region, providing extensive opportunities for peer learning and networking. In the past, external experts who have visited to provide workshops or seminars on campus include Bambi Betts, Kath Murdoch, Dylan Wiliam, Lyn Sharratt and Sarah White.

Our teachers also regularly act as lecturers, seminar leaders and facilitators at educational conferences and workshops run by organisations such as EARCOS and ECIS.
