Job Description

Drama Teacher


Main purpose

The teacher will:

• Fulfil the professional responsibilities of a drama (and possibly dance) teacher

• Meet the expectations set out in the Teachers’ Standards


Main Responsibilities

a) Planning and Teaching

  • Plan and teach well-structured drama and dance lessons to all classes assigned to you
  • Planning and preparing long, medium and short term documentation
  • Establishing clear and efficient class routines
  • Creating a stimulating, supportive learning environment in the classroom
  • Adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of pupils

·       Setting high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils

·       Promoting good progress and outcomes by pupils

·       Demonstrating good subject and curriculum knowledge


b) Assessing, Reporting and Monitoring

  • Assessing, monitoring, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
  • Making accurate and productive use of assessment
  • Providing and contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils

 

c) Pastoral Oversight of Pupils

  • Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any class or group of pupils assigned to you
  • Providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters; making relevant records and reports
  • Making records of any reports on the personal and social needs of pupils
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere
  • Communicating daily information relevant to pupils.
  • Sharing successes as a class and where appropriate addressing concerns as a class
  • Encouraging pupils to be accountable for actions and responsible for learning
  • Setting and maintaining expectations through regular reminders and reward systems
  • Communicating information about pupils to appropriate staff
  • Using the School’s MIS to log information about pupils


d) Safeguarding

·       Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and our safeguarding and child protection policies

·       Work with the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) to promote the best interests of pupils, including sharing concerns where necessary

·       Promote the safeguarding of all pupils in the school


e) School Strategy and Improvement

  • Advising and co-operating with the Head teacher, Senior Leadership team and other colleagues on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes and pastoral arrangements
  • Taking part as required, in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the School
  • Take part in the school’s appraisal procedures
  • Take part in further training and development in order to improve own teaching
  • Take part in the appraisal and professional development of others, where appropriate
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s policies, practices and procedures, so as to support the school’s vision and values

·       Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school

·       Work with others on curriculum and pupil development to secure co-ordinated outcomes


f) Professional Relationships

  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils
  • Communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the School
  • Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above


g) Other Professional Duties

  • Delivering and maintaining the effective implementation of school policies
  • Following the School Registration procedures as set out in the Staff Handbook; 
  • Commitment to the profession, self-motivation and willingness to learn from others
  • Commitment to ensuring the safeguarding and welfare of all children
  • Understanding the importance of meeting the social and emotional needs of the children
  • Ability to liaise with outside agencies and organisations
  • Be a genuine team player who works well in collaborative situations
  • Accompanying classes on school trips as required.
  • Writing risk assessments where appropriate for your role
  • Organisation, management and teaching of productions, plays and drama presentations
  • Work in partnership with the Music Teacher for shows, presentations and productions
  • Possibly, you will also run 2 weekly after-school dance or drama clubs (remuneration additional to salary)


h) Special Requirements

  • A satisfactory enhanced DBS clearance is required
  • A good attendance record
