Job overview

We are looking to recruit a number of dedicated and flexible, part-time, Exams Invigilators. Interviews will take place early/mid-September.

The purpose of the job is to supervise the conduct of Internal and External exams appropriately in accordance with agreed procedure, from the initial preparation of the exam venue to the preparation of the pupil scripts for despatch and tidying of the exam hall for the next session, at the end of the exam. Full training will be provided.

The duties are as follows;

  • Prepare the exam hall or room in accordance with JCQ requirements (notices, clocks etc) and ensure all candidates are correctly seated with the correct papers and authorised materials.
  • Ensure pupils are aware of exam conditions on entry and retrieve mobile phones, unauthorised materials etc prior to announcing the start of the exam.
  • Record the start and finish times of exams accurately and visibly in the hall/room and ensure the attendance registers are completed.
  • Actively monitor candidates during the exam, ensuring they adhere to exam regulations at all times.
  • Deal with any queries as they arise e.g. regarding timings, suspected error on the paper, and manage the entry of late candidates and those requiring to leave the hall in accordance with the regulations.
  • Ensure that accurate timekeeping is maintained and notify the candidates of the end of the exam, with due regard for extra time allowances.
  • Assist in the collation and packing of scripts, ensuring that scripts are never left unattended, and in the preparation of the venue for further exam sessions.

On occasion the jobholder may be required to liaise with the subject teacher and/or the Exams Officer where a query raised by a candidate requires further expertise and professional judgement. Exams take place in both the large exam hall and, for pupils requiring special arrangements, in smaller rooms. Invigilators may specify which environment they prefer to work in and we will do our best to accommodate any preferences.

Person Specification

  • Ability to communicate with staff and pupils clearly
  • Ability to work to agreed instructions either as part of a team, or alone as agreed
  • Common sense and initiative, as well as appreciation for the need for confidentiality
  • Reliability and punctuality.

Terms & Conditions

  • This is a part-time flexible hours role, for the internal and external exam periods.
  • Exam sessions normally run from 9 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5.30 pm Monday to Friday. Invigilators need to arrive 30 minutes before the start time in order to set up exam room/s.
  • A refreshment break and/or lunch will be provided depending on hours worked
  • Free parking is available on the College campus or adjacent road
  • Hourly rate: £14.28

The College comprises a Sixth Form,  Senior School, Senior Prep and Junior  Prep with 1,300 pupils in all. Over half the  pupils in the Senior School are boarders  (weekly or flexi). Hurst is a significant  medium-sized enterprise in Mid Sussex  with around 480 employees and an  annual turnover of £35 million pa.

What particularly strikes visitors to the  College is the vibrant dynamic of our  community. Situated within a 140- acre campus, surrounded by beautiful  countryside, Hurst lies on the border of the  South Downs National Park, close to the  village of Hurstpierpoint in West Sussex.

This superb location is also just 20  minutes from the city and beaches of  Brighton and Hove, whilst London train  stations can be reached from Hassocks  or Haywards Heath in under an hour.  The central campus is thoughtfully  laid out and planned with zones for the  Academic, Co-Curricular and Pastoral  areas of school life. These all lie at  the centre of a superbly equipped  broader campus.

Hurst has an excellent academic track  record and the vast majority of pupils  go on to Russell Group universities  including Oxford, Cambridge, the  various London Universities, as well as  large numbers to Exeter, Bristol and  Durham.

Founded in 1849 by Nathanial Woodard,  Hurst is a Church of England College.  The Christian ethos underpins College  life but we are a diverse community; we  welcome those of other faiths, or no  faith, and pursue an inclusive approach  in all that we do.

The College is a Co-Sponsor, together  with the Diocese of Chichester, of the  newly formed Hurst Education Trust,  a local Multi Academy Trust. The Trust  currently has four local primary schools,  although it is envisaged it will grow to  over time.
