Job overview

Are you an experienced filmmaker looking to utilise your media skills in a dynamic new role? This is an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified individual to provide key film and media support at Emanuel School.

In this role, you will be involved in the running of co-curricular activities, including weekly media/filmmaking clubs, two courses during the school holidays, and organising activities in the film studio for prospective parents’ events. There will also be an opportunity to organise the annual Emanuel Film Festival and to run an annual House Film Competition.

You will provide tutorial and technical support to A Level Film Studies students and those who wish to undertake an EPQ in filmmaking. You will also supervise and support any students or staff working within the film studio or using studio equipment. In addition to this, you will undertake a range of videography duties in the Drama department and for internal/external communications, including filming performances, productions, and promotional videos.

We are looking for an individual with media and filmmaking technical skills and experience. This will include a detailed knowledge of:

  • Media and film apparatus, software and its maintenance and use
  • Media and film equipment and its use as it relates to both live, recorded and playback techniques
  • Teaching technical and creative elements of media and filmmaking across a range of experiences and ability levels
  • Film producing, directing and editing

The hours for this role are 40 hours per week during term time and 30 hours per week for 3 weeks during the school holidays. Occasional Saturday mornings and evenings may also be required. Part-time working would be considered for the right candidate.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
