Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a great headteacher who will lead our school to excellence. The new headteacher will hold a clear vision on how to drive standards and be able to lead with confidence and credibility.

Melbourn is at an important point in its journey. Graded inadequate in 2023, the school has already made very positive progress. The school has a staff team in place that are ready to make rapid and sustainable improvement. This is a potentially career defining role and a great opportunity for the right leader.

We know that Melbourn Village College has huge potential. Two feeder primaries for Melbourn are about to join our trust; we particularly welcome candidates who would be enthusiastic about working in partnership with the primary schools and championing the potential of all-through education.

You will be supported and challenged by a Trust team that drives for excellence and believes in investing in and empowering their leaders. This role is perfect for you if:

• You have a strong track record of leading successful school improvement

• You are passionate about education and driven to achieve exceptional outcomes.

• You possess a clear vision for the future of our school and the ability to inspire others to share that vision.

• You are a champion of high standards and believe in the power of excellent behaviour and personal development, great teaching, and a rich, ambitious curriculum. This will be a challenging but deeply rewarding position.

You will need to:

• Develop a culture of excellence that empowers both pupils and staff.

• Work in partnership with parents and the wider community

• Lead a school on an improvement journey, making sure Melbourn becomes the great school its community deserves.

Melbourn Village College is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational, 11-16 academy, situated near Royston in Cambridgeshire. The school, which converted to become an academy school in October 2011, has 474 students on the school roll. Since 1 September 2013, Melbourn Village College has been a member of The Cam Academy Trust.

Melbourn Village College believes its size allows it to provide students with the individual attention, support and challenges they need to set them firmly on the path towards reaching their potential, and as part of The Cam Academy Trust it feels it is able to provide unique opportunities rarely afforded to a village college.

Values and vision

Melbourn Village College subscribes fully to the Henry Morris principal of lifelong learning and schools being at the heart of the local community. It aims to develop the full potential and value the success of every individual child, helping them to develop the skills that will equip them for life-long learning in a changing society. Students are encouraged to remember that 'Everybody is Somebody', and think of themselves not only as individuals but to see themselves as part of a wider community, be it their class, school, local villages or the wider world.

Ofsted

“Students make good progress based on their average starting points. More-able students achieve particularly well across a range of subjects. Most of the teaching is good, and a small proportion is outstanding. Students behave well in lessons and around the college. The Principal, two Assistant Principals and the committed governing body have a good understanding of the college’s strengths and areas for development.”
