HLTA

Grade 8 (Scale Point 26-31)

Headway is an outstanding alternative provision centre, based at Baysgarth School. Our aim at Headway is to ensure that every learner has the opportunity to thrive, feel valued and be successful, and we are committed to ensuring this happens for each and every student no matter what challenges or barriers to learning they face.

We understand that every young person is an individual and they have individual talents and needs which must be nurtured if they are to be successful. Our vision at Headway is to offer vulnerable students and their families an educational provision which will do just that. We are looking to appoint a highly motivated, enthusiastic and committed individual to join our team as we develop this provision. The successful candidate will carry out a key role within the Headway team, providing the curriculum and intervention support to our students.

We offer flexible, individualised programmes for students who, for a variety of reasons, are finding mainstream school difficult, which includes a therapeutic, nurturing approach alongside our academic curriculum.

In addition to the right curriculum, children need the right pastoral care. At Headway, all students are allocated with a Key Worker, who will develop the home school partnership and ensure that communication is strong and effective.

The role of the HLTA within the team is key in providing high quality learning experiences at all times for our students. Our students deserve the best teaching and this post will ensure that the teaching can match the needs of everyone.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Working collaboratively with Baysgarth teaching staff to create outstanding learning opportunities
  • Planning and delivering outstanding learning activities for groups
  • Creating personalised learning plans matched to need that can be delivered by other staff
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on student achievement, progress and development.
  • Delivering 1:1 or group targeted interventions which may include social and emotional interventions

The following qualifications and experience are essential:

  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) Grade C or above
  • Experience of working with students with additional needs within a secondary school
  • Knowledge and awareness of KS2 and post 16 education
  • Knowledge of how students learn and how additional needs might impact on this
  • Knowledge of SEND needs such as ADHD and Autism and how these can be supported
  • Using ICT to support students’ learning
  • Using differentiation strategies to support a range of learning needs effectively

Headway in partnership with Baysgarth School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to apply for enhanced disclosure from the DBS.

If you are inspired by the challenge and responsibility of this opportunity we would like to hear from you. Further details and an application form can be downloaded from our school website. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the post, please feel free to contact Jade Driscoll, Head of School, at the school.

Baysgarth is part of the Riverview Family of Schools which comprises of one secondary school, a primary school, an alternative provision and a teacher training provider.  Find out more about us here!

Over the past decade, Baysgarth has undergone a complete transformation. In summer 2014 our results were the second worst in the Local Authority and were on a three-year downward trend. Since then we have made significant and sustained improvements; in 2015 we were named the most improved school in North Lincolnshire and in 2016 we were in the top five schools in the Humber region, in the top two schools in North Lincolnshire and among the top 10% of schools nationally!  In 2019 our results propelled us into the top 4% of the country for the progress we make with our students.  Our aim to provide the highest quality education for local young people is always our top priority and we continue to strive to improve our offer.

This transformation has come about for a number of reasons. Firstly, we raised our expectations of what our students can achieve and insisted on high standards of behaviour and appearance. Secondly, we focused our staff on the quality of learning taking place in the classroom. We came up with our own Baysgarth Learning Model that underpins our lessons and focused on promoting collaborative learning and Kagan techniques in the classroom. Thirdly, we focused on changing the culture of the school to ensure that we promoted strong teams, encouraged creativity and risk-taking, and praised success.

As a result our classrooms have become vibrant and creative places that are enjoyable for staff and students. We have a very strong teaching staff in all departments which means that any new colleague will be well supported and have the opportunity to continue to grow and develop professionally.

Baysgarth continues to be a Good school that is ‘making good progress on the journey to outstanding’ according to Ofsted, who visited most recently in January 2023.  Inspectors described the school to “have created an inclusive community” where “pupils are well cared for”, “have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities”, “benefit from high-quality teaching”, along with having access to “a range of experiences that go beyond the national curriculum…experiences that they may not otherwise have had”.  Leadership and governance is strong, with “a clear vision” and “high expectations”.  Baysgarth is consistently one of the top performing schools in the Humber region and it is our mission to recruit the most talented staff to cement our excellent reputation.

Baysgarth is ideally placed at the meeting point of four authorities – North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Hull and East Riding. Half of our teaching staff live on the North Bank and travel across the Humber Bridge every day, all of them commenting on the speed and ease of travel with Baysgarth being within 15 minutes of all the West Hull villages and only 20 minutes from Hull city centre. With the area having lower property prices and higher average wages than surrounding areas we are an ideal spot to live and work.

We’re looking for brilliant people to help us build a truly great school, so if this is you we look forward to your application! Feel free to contact us if you want more information or to arrange for a visit.
