Job overview

Based in the beautiful, historic and inspiring city of Durham, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation (DCSF) provides a forward-thinking and contemporary boarding and day education for around 750 boys and girls aged 3 to 18. This unique and purposeful family of schools has been created out of a recent merger. Together, Durham School (for pupils aged 11 to 18) and Chorister School (for pupils aged 3 to 11) enjoy strong links with the cathedral, including proudly educating the 48 boys and girls who make up the cathedral choir. The Foundation exists to give the very best holistic education and pastoral care to as diverse a community of children as possible, equipping them with moral integrity, an ambition for achievement, a responsibility for their actions and a commitment to always showing kindness to others. Importantly, it also gives them opportunities to make the most and best of childhood.

Following the appointment of Kieran McLaughlin to the Headship of Durham School Dubai from April 2025, the Board of Governors seeks a creative and inspirational leader to build and deliver an ambitious vision for the next five years. This is an exciting opportunity to lead an inclusive and close-knit community in developing and implementing a strategy for the Foundation that enables it to look to the future with confidence and ambition.

Values-led, child-centred and highly personable, the next Principal will be an outstanding communicator with the warmth and gravitas to engage all parts of the DCSF community and operate as a compelling ambassador for the Foundation externally. A substantial track record of successful senior management experience is essential, as are strong intellectual abilities, a deep understanding of boarding and a strong grasp of the business dimension of modern headship. A genuine commitment to holistic education and DCSF’s nurturing and inclusive ethos is essential.
