Wandsworth Hospital Schools and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) has an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced Science Teacher to join our service.

We require an enthusiastic, innovative and compassionate teacher who would like to broaden their experience in working with vulnerable young people in Hospital Schools and within the community. The successful candidate will become part of our highly collaborative and supportive hospital teaching team, including other subject specialists, teachers of the Deaf and specialist HLTA’s. There is a comprehensive training and induction package to support our new teachers in the role and further develop their professional expertise as specialists in mental health and hospital education.

About our School

HHTS is a Hospital School and Medical Pupil Referral Unit that provides education for a diverse range of students aged 5-18 who are experiencing a severe or chronic illness and/or have mental health issues. 

HHTS encompasses St George’s Hospital, CAMHS School, Community Education, Mental Health Outreach and Corner House; the National Deaf CAMHS inpatient unit. 

The school has retained it’s 'Outstanding' OFSTED grading in 2023 and is a UNICEF Rights Respecting School with a strong focus on excellence and wellbeing for students and staff.

Our students have the opportunity to make accelerated progress through personalised learning programmes delivered in small groups or in one-to-one tuition. Staff and students build positive nurturing relationships, which enable students to grow in confidence, self-acceptance and compassion for all. 

WHHTS is at the forefront of educational practice for students experiencing mental or physical ill health. We are committed to maximising access to education for children and young people who have medical needs or mental health issues that result in inpatient admissions or recurring absences from school.

Under the guidance of the senior leadership team, you will be required to organise, deliver and evaluate learning for inpatient children presenting with a range of educational needs; setting suitable targets and liaising with home schools. Part of the role will also require you to work in our home tuition sector, according to need.  

Our well-resourced provision is staffed with highly qualified teachers and support staff, and you will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team. You will be willing to work flexibly with vulnerable learners in a rewarding, supportive and creative environment. The successful candidate will be play a key role in leading a service with excellent practice and high-quality outcomes for the CYP. Class sizes are small with high staff to student ratios. Nursing staff are also in attendance to lessons to ensure care and education go hand in hand. All our teachers and HLTA’s have the opportunity to teach across the hospital sectors.

We welcome applications from teachers who have the following:

• a proven ability to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics across the key stages, including supporting students at A Level

• experience of successful outcomes for pupils with SEN

• an excellent teaching record 

• the ability to plan and deliver outstanding teaching and learning for both individuals and small groups with high quality outcomes for all pupils

• the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders (schools, health, other agencies and parents)

Experience of working with students with mental health and/or SEN needs would be of added benefit.
