Secondary School Teachers hold an important role at ICS as they guide our older students on their path to IB exams, university, and future career choices. Our Secondary Teachers must demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining a collaborative culture and a supportive environment within the school. They need to have a thorough understanding of the social and emotional dimensions of learning and encourage students to share their joys and concerns knowing they will always be supported.   


As a Mathematics Teacher, you play a pivotal role in fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for mathematics among your students. Your primary responsibility is to deliver engaging and challenging mathematics lessons that inspire students to thrive and excel, catering to the diverse needs and abilities of all your students. Your goal is to develop essential mathematical knowledge, deep conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills whilst promoting the IB philosophy of inquiry-based learning, nurturing a positive attitude toward the subject.


Specific Responsibilities

 

Teaching and Learning

  • Deliver engaging and interactive Mathematics lessons to students in Grades 6 to 12, following the IB MYP and DP curricula.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of students in your classes and construct learning activities that challenge and inspire them.
  • Utilize technology effectively to enhance learning experiences and support the school's digital learning initiatives.
  • Manage the classroom environment effectively, taking into account the academic, social, and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Teaching the Personal Development Programme to the class for which he/she is a tutor.

 

Assessment and Reporting

  • Ensure that formative and summative assessments are aligned with learning objectives, providing timely and relevant feedback to students.
  • Attend Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences as a means to provide comprehensive feedback on student progress, attainment, and learning targets.
  • Maintain communication with parents, keeping them informed about their children's learning and being proactive in addressing any concerns.
  • Accurately record and report student progress according to school procedures.

 

Curriculum development

  • Ensure curriculum plans are up-to-date.
  • Liaise with the Head of Department and IB Coordinators to ensure that programme requirements are met within the classes taught.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of interdisciplinary curriculum projects, fostering a holistic educational experience for students.
  • Supervise Personal Projects and Extended Essays as required.

 

Social and emotional aspects of learning as a teacher and tutor

  • Support the social and emotional well-being of students, creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Act as a tutor and teach the Personal Development Programme to the assigned class, nurturing the holistic development of students.
  • Inform, in a timely manner that allows for early intervention, tutors and the Secondary Pastoral Leadership Team about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour.
  • Participate in student recognition processes, including assemblies, academic awards ceremonies, and extracurricular activities.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.

 

Supporting the collaborative culture at ICS

  • Actively contribute to the collaborative culture of the school by participating in team meetings and Secondary School meetings.
  • Adhere to Secondary School deadlines and assist, as required, with covering classes for absent colleagues.
  • Assist in the administration of exams to ensure a smooth assessment process.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the school experience for learners by participating in extracurricular activities and the field trip program.
  • Contribute positively to the collaborative culture of his/her teams by being an engaged participant in team and secondary meetings.


The successful candidate will have:


  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Current classroom teacher qualification to teach Mathematics.
  • Minimum 4 years of recent and relevant Secondary School classroom experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of the IB DP and MYP programmes.
  • Experience in an international school environment is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Competence in using technology for both learning and information management purposes.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of children of 12 - 18 years.
  • Empathy and social skills.
  • Documented record of excellence in teaching.

Terms and Conditions


The initial contract is for two years and is renewable. The generous salary and range of benefits will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, with the overall package reflecting the importance of the position.

The ICS Inter-Community School, situated in Zürich, is a mainstream, mixed gender, all-through school located in Zurich. Established in 1960, the ICS now has over 800 students from 55 nationalities.

At the Primary School level The Inter-Community School covers the following subjects; Mathematics, Reading and Writing, The Arts, and Social Studies,

At the Middle and Secondary School levels, students of the Inter-Community School study English, German, Sciences, Mathematics, French, Spanish, Performing Arts, Design, and Physical Education.
