Job overview
Welcome to Harrow Shanghai! We are a high-performing and market-leading international British curriculum school located in one of the most exciting cities in the world.
We offer an independent, British international education from Early Years to Upper Sixth within a modern and purpose-built campus just 35 minutes from the centre of the city. Shanghai is a great city, life is dynamic and varied, and there is a sense of energy and drive everywhere.
The School was launched in September 2016 and has grown into one of China's leading international schools. Harrow Shanghai pupils are engaged, aspirational and hard working, their parents are highly supportive and the staff are committed and close-knit. The community is exceptionally strong. Pupils achieve highly both within and outside the classroom and go on to enter many of the world's most competitive universities, including Oxbridge. Over the last four years, our Upper Sixth leavers have achieved an average of close to 75% A*/A grades across all A Levels taken. IGCSE results are also impressive, as is the progress achieved by our younger pupils.
Harrow is, though, about much more than simply outstanding academic results. Our pupils excel in a wide range of fields, including music, drama, sport and the arts, as well as involving themselves in service to the local community.
The School is seeking an exceptional Senior Deputy Head to commence in post in August 2025. This is a significant position. The Senior Deputy Head is the whole-school second-in-charge, and is the person who oversees our teaching, learning and pastoral care, line managing our Head of Upper School and Head of Lower School.
The role is ideal for an experienced school leader, based either in the UK or overseas, perhaps looking for a last senior leadership position before moving into headship, or perhaps seeking a role in one of the most academically strong schools in China within a supportive and growing group of schools. AISL, who operate all eleven Harrow schools in Asia, offer a range of high quality professional development opportunities, and are keen to meet and develop potential leaders who will be able to pursue their careers in our schools.
The post holder will also be a teacher! All teachers, including the Head Master, have a timetabled class, and we always look for teachers who have a love of teaching, the ability to challenge a wide range of pupil abilities, and who take a real pleasure in the company of children.
Successful applicants can expect a generous salary, a performance-related bonus, accommodation, medical and flight benefits, and 100% tuition fees remission for up to two children.
How to apply:
For this post, we have simplified our application process. Please read the attached application pack and then email your CV to the Head Master, Alex Reed, directly at Alexander.reed@harrowshanghai.cn.
If you have any questions at all, Alex will also be very happy to hear from you (yes, including over the Christmas holidays) and will reply to you directly.
The deadline to contact Alex is January 13th, and we will arrange the next stage of the process after these initial conversations. The next stage will involve conversations with AISL senior staff and with colleagues at the school. The final stage will involve a visit to the school and the chance to meet us all in person.
Harrow Shanghai is committed to safeguarding the children in our care and their welfare is our top priority. All adults in the School community are expected to follow its Child Protection procedures and are required to undertake safeguarding checks.

About Harrow International School, Shanghai
Harrow School Shanghai is a co-educational day school for students aged from 18 months to 18 years. The teaching is based upon the EYFS Framework and the English National Curriculum, culminating in IGCSEs for Years 10 and 11 and A levels within the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13). With a world-renowned reputation for its rich heritage of educational excellence, unique traditions and inspiring Leadership and Service programme, Harrow boasts a state-of-the-art campus with outstanding facilities, all located within 35 minutes of the centre of one of the world's most exciting and dynamic cities.
Harrow Shanghai was the fourth international school in the Harrow family of schools, initially joining those in Bangkok, Beijing and Hong Kong, alongside the historic Harrow School and its near-neighbour, John Lyon School, in London. There are now 12 AISL Harrow schools: Shenzhen, Chongqing, Nanning, Haikou, Zhuhai and the Hong Kong Children's School in China and Appi in Japan.
The School is organised as follows:
- Early Years -Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception
- Primary -Years 1- 5
- Upper School -Years 6- 13
The School combines elements of educational philosophy, practice and traditions from Harrow School in London within an international context. It is envisaged that the School will eventually grow to a roll of approximately 950. As with the other Harrow Schools, Shanghai’s vision, 'Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership', is realised by means of a characteristically Harrow approach to schooling which demands of students and teachers high academic attainment, involvement in a rich array of extra-curricular activities, and engagement in high quality pastoral support structures, particularly the House system. Students are assigned into Houses where their which their academic and all-round well-being is monitored, nurtured and supported.
