This is an exciting opportunity to join a popular, impressive and expanding department in a modern and growing school as a full-time Teacher of Design & Technology. The successful candidate will be a subject expert that is comfortable in a practical and workshop environment and have the ability to work with pupils across a range of practical projects; to teach Design and Technology and resistant materials to at least KS3 & KS4.

We are looking for a full-time Teacher of Design and Technology who has excellent subject knowledge and is an excellent teacher, with fantastic communication and organisational skills that will enable all pupils to progress and be inspired in their learning.

You will have a desire to continually reflect on and develop your subject and teaching practice while becoming part of our school community, becoming invested in the future of both the department and the school. You will contribute your own strengths and skills to the department and school.

The Design and Technology Department

The Design and Technology Department (D&T) is housed in a state-of-the-art studio and workshop that first opened in 2020 and continues to develop forward-thinking facilities. The D&T Department comprises a creative design studio; equipped with a class set of mobile workstations with CAD/CAM software provision (SolidWorks) and large format digital output devices for pupils. There is an open plan workshop, a projects area, an advanced manufacturing suite, staff office, materials preparation room with store and staff specific equipment.

This is a growing department that focuses on putting our design pupils at the forefront of the subject; promoting design creativity, advanced manufacturing, including electronic development and generating enthusiasm for wider disciplines associated with the world of Design, Engineering and Technology. The Design & Technology Department has a full-time technician.

Essential for Teacher of DT

  • A good degree in a relevant discipline and a recognised teaching qualification with QTS.
  • Excellent subject knowledge and a passion for instilling in pupils a love for the subject
  • Comfortable in a practical workshop setting and experience of teaching/supervising pupils in a workshop environment and using workshop equipment
  • Experience of teaching Design and Technology at KS3 and KS4
  • Excellent teaching practitioner with exceptional student management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and the flexibility to take on new challenges
  • The ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Commitment to, and experience of, using a range of teaching styles and methods including workshop machinery and ICT such as CAD/CAM

Desirable for Teacher of DT

  • Experience and/or ability to teach Design and Technology at A Level
  • Experience of Exam Board GCSE and/or A Level marking

Role of a Teacher at Maida Vale School

  • To plan and teach effective lessons

  • To use data to inform teaching and learning
  • To use the school’s behaviour policy to manage behaviour effectively, to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
  • To fulfil wider professional responsibilities including being a Personal Tutor or co-PT, carrying out supervision duties, attending staff meetings and school evening events
  • To actively seek to extend professional development
  • Perform any other reasonable duties and responsibilities which may be requested by the Headmaster

The school operates its own pay scales and will offer a salary commensurate with experience and the nature of this role.
