Job overview

We are looking to recruit a History teacher to lead the subject in the school up to and including GCSE. The successful candidate will join a department of seven History teachers. History is a very popular subject at GCSE and the school follows the I/GCSE Cambridge course.  

St Edmund’s is an expanding and successful school of 600+ girls and boys aged 2 to 16. The ability to offer a subsidiary subject, particularly Religious Studies is desirable although not essential for full-time employment. The school participates in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. Accommodation on site may be available. Early applications are encouraged.                                                       

St Edmund’s is thriving with numbers the highest in its 150 year history. Average class sizes are small, circa seventeen pupils. In 2024 our students posted a 97% GCSE pass rate (grades 4-9) against a national average of 67%. The proportion of grades awarded at 7-9 (the old A*/A) was 45% compared to a national average of 22%. In History pupils achieved a 100% pass rate.

The school was inspected in October 2024 by ISI and the school passed in all areas but the report has not yet been issued. In June 2021 the key findings were:

  • Pupils demonstrate kindness and compassion towards one another and are highly respectful. Pupils are confident and considered decision makers.
  • Pupils contribute enthusiastically to help create a strong and vibrant school community.

St Edmund’s School is a mixed, independent all-through day and boarding school for pupils ages two to 16, located in Hindhead, Surrey. 

The school comprises  four parts: Little Ed’s Nursery and Reception’ the Lower Prep and Prep; the  Senior Prep; and the Senior school.

The school was originally founded in Norfolk in 1874, but moved to Surrey in 1900. It became a charitable trust in 1979.
