Temporary ALS Support Tutor

We welcome applications for this support post to commence as soon as possible until the end of June 2025.

The Role

Primarily, your role will be to work closely with an individual student with an EHCP, supporting all aspects of the learning process, including exam access arrangements and where required, providing personal care. There may be other times where you are required to provide support to other students with a range of learning, physical and emotional needs to achieve their full potential whilst studying at Cardinal Newman. This may be achieved through supporting the student in specific curriculum areas or through more general support provided by the ALS department.

Department Information:

The Additional Learning Support Department at Cardinal Newman College comprises full-time and part time staff. This is a dedicated and specialist Learning Support team who have wide experience in supporting students with specific learning needs and disabilities. They also support students with the management of any special health needs or if students experience other difficulties at particular times.

All staff members have experience of working with students with a variety of additional needs, staff are committed to the academic and pastoral support for students so they are given all opportunities to fulfil their potential through specialist support and tailor made support packages where necessary, which allow students to work at their own pace and reach their full potential.

The department is an integral part of the wider college community. There is a strong team ethos of collaboration and commitment to continuous improvement. The ALS facilities include a large classroom base fully equipped with IT facilities. The successful candidate will be expected to positively supplement the flexible, committed and aspirational strengths that already exist in the department, including, but not limited to maintaining positive outcomes, supporting students to achieve aspirations, transition activities, the curriculum and enrichment activities.

The main duties and responsibilities of this role include:

  • To facilitate the provision of flexible support and the development of learning opportunities for students with a wide range of learning needs including ASD, ADHD, OCD, visual and hearing impairments, dyslexia, physical needs and dyscalculia
  • To maintain clear and accurate systems of records in order to review learning needs, set targets in respect of Additional Learning Support and support student progress towards achieving their minimum target grades.
  • To liaise with curriculum staff about how best to support teaching and learning to ensure that an individual students need and development are met. This may include differentiating material, enlarging resources, reading and note taking.
  • To undertake exam invigilation and facilitate other special arrangements e.g. scribing for examinations.
  • To be aware and supportive of students with medical needs e.g. diabetes, epilepsy and also assist students with mobility issues around the college site.

The Successful Candidate

The ALS department is looking for someone who is educated to Level 3, has the ability to take comprehensive notes in a variety of subjects for students and has the ability to work as part of a team.

Terms and Conditions

Hours: 31 hours per week, term time only. Working times will be 9.30am to 4.00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 8.30am - 4.00pm on Wednesday.

Salary: The post will be paid on the Sixth Form Colleges’ Support Staff Pay Spine at points 7 to 11 pro rata to £23,585 to £26,097 per annum. Actual Salary £17,049.92 to £18,865.88 per annum.

An Outstanding College 

Cardinal Newman is one of the highest performing sixth form colleges nationally for Value Added and the latest Ofsted Inspection in February 2023 graded all areas of the College as ‘outstanding’. The report confirmed that students have highly positive attitudes to learning. Attendance is very high and students are committed to their studies and are highly motivated to achieve.
