Changes to MFL teaching

(15)
This is a presentation I put together to discuss the changes to MFL in the coming years with the department. It includes information on the new Programme of Study for KS2 and KS3, what we know of the new GCSE, as well as some of the points from Ofsted's subject specific guidance which I found most relevant for us. The slide comparing the programme of study for KS2 and KS3 is &'borrowed&'; from one of Rachel Hawkes' presentations. Key words: Curriculum Programme of Study Ofsted

AS and A2 exam style tasks

(14)
This is a selection of texts (most from Deutsche Welle) which match the AS/A2 topics. I have added exam style questions and a suggested time limit. We use AQA so I am not entirely sure how much these resemble the tasks of other exam boards.

These are two revision lessons for Y11 to practise the main difficulties with translations: difference between mag/gern, using connectives and the correct word order, comparative, impersonable phrases, infinitive phrases, using seit. The lesson assumes that the students have learned these grammar topics previously, and this is just revision.

The lessons are designed as carousel activities, where students translate sentences in pairs.
I did it with my Y11 set 2 this year and they enjoyed it and found it helpful.

The story of a Gastarbeiter

(4)
This is the account of an Italian Gastarbeiter. I have used this as part of the immigration topic with Y13. The story is taken from the website www.angekommen.com. There are many other interesting personal accounts of Gastarbeiter on that site. I have adapted the text a little bit to suit Y13 learners.

These are three texts describing an ideal partner. You will see that they all follow the same pattern. The pupils used the text as a model to write their own description of their ideal partner (we asked them this question in a controlled speaking assessment on relationships)

Meine Familie und ich

Reading and then subsequent grammar exercise on the topic of 'meine Familie und ich'. The text is written from Ronald Weasley's point of view (he is Harry Potter's friend). Both worksheets have a version for stronger and weaker students. This can be done with a high-achieving Y9 group or otherwise GCSE classes.

These are a few resources to be used in the cultural topic of Berlin Wall/Berliner Mauer, DDR/GDR. These do not form one lesson, I just included them in the same post because they are related. Hope that makes sense.

The German School System

(2)
This is a Powerpoint presentation outlining what the German education system was like for me (NRW 1990s). I do realise that other Bundeslaender have other systems and that some things have changed, but mostly this is still accurate, I think. This is just a series of texts on various elements of the education system. I have previously put them on the IWB and then asked questions in English that students had to answer, using mini-whiteboards, or have printed them off, split the class into groups who had to read the paragraphs and then present the information to others in the class.

Introducing the imperative for Year 12. I used this as part of the 'Werbung' topic, which is why as a starter this PP includes two commercials, and another one at the end. i followed this by asking pupils to come up with their own slogans using the imperative.

Lesson on the importance of education worldwide to fit in with the education topic in KS4. This is based on a lesson plan taken from the German Oxfam website. The PowerPoint presentation presents the pupils which a number of questions. I asked these to the class first and discussed the answers first before revealing the answers. After the general discussions we read the case study of Pedro (attached worksheet) and discussed the difference education will make to his life.

German numbers practice up to 100 - German beginners

(2)
I originally made this for a mixed ability class, but my set 6 got on surprisingly well with this. I had previously introduced numbers up to 10). In this lesson I introduced the numbers up to 100 in units of 10 (i.e. 10, 20, 30 ...) on the board. Then they did the worksheet, and a lot of them managed to work out the rule (numbers are said 'backwards') by themselves.

Where I would like to live in the future

(3)
I used this as part of the Home and Environment topic, as our students had to write a paragraph on their future plans as part of the Controlled Assessment. The Powerpoint document shows the structure of the lesson, the worksheet has useful phrases and a reading task. The questions to go with the reading task are on the Powerpoint and I asked the students to write their answers on mini-whiteboards. You could of course easily copy and paste the questions onto the worksheet if you prefer. Hope this is useful.

Family Trapdoor Speaking

I used this originally as a whole class trapdoor speaking acitivity. The students then split into groups of three to do the speaking activity again, and then this worksheet leads to a (very structured) writing activity. It worked well with my mixed ability Y9 group.

This task is specifically to go with a listening track on kerboodle/Nelson Thornes AS textbook. You may however, find the initial match up useful even if you don't have access to the listening track. I used this with a very weak Y12 group.
