After learning about Mint Warden Issac Newton and his mission to bring coin counterfeiters to justice, pupils take on the role of his spy, charged with learning about counterfeiting and infiltrating the criminal network of the notorious coin forger William Chaloner. Explore the work of coinmakers and criminals from the 1690s and consider the impression the monarch wished to make through his image and coins.

Evaluate Edward I’s decisions and effectiveness as a monarch and analyse his response to England’s coinage crisis. How should a medieval monarch respond to a crisis? This activity puts pupils in the role of the King’s adviser: to help analyse, understand and respond to the currency crisis that Edward I faced in the late 1270s.
