<p>This lesson can be spread over a double, depending on the length of your lessons and the ability range of your students.</p> <p>The lesson includes a divergent thinking starter ‘What does Bourdieu have for breakfast’ which also includes some prior topic memory retrieval.</p> <p>Key definitions of Cultural Capital and Habitus are included.</p> <p>The core focus of the lesson is a paragraph practice with a model paragraph, allowing the teacher to circulate the room and offer live feedback whilst students study the model (best to hand out a printed version of the model) and students can be encouraged to self-assess by highlighting their use of connectives, chains of analysis and key terminology.</p>

<p>This is a 2-3 part lesson, depending on the length of your lessons.</p> <p>The slides provide summary information of key labelling studies, and key subculture studies including Rist, Becker, Hargreaves, Rosenthal &amp; Jacobson, Educational Triage, Beachside Comp and Hightown Grammar.</p> <p>There are activities which encourage classroom talk and the processing of new information (many use mini-whiteboards but could easily be done on paper)</p> <p>Two video clips are embedded from YouTube - a clip from Mean Girls as an intro/stimulus, and a clip for Rosenthal &amp; Jacobson.</p> <p>Slides with lots of text (such as slide 29) are best printed in advance so students can complete the summary task with a paper copy.</p>

<p>This slide deck provides memory retrieval opportunities covering the functions of education and key vocabulary used to discuss the functions of education from a Functionalist and a Marxist perspective. It also recaps Bowles &amp; Gintis and discusses possible criticisms of the Marxist view.</p> <p>The slides include tasks, model paragraphs and opportunities for students to plan and consider their responses in a structured way.</p> <p>There are 29 slides, culminating in a student task to write a profound evaluation of the core function of education, considering the views covered in the lesson.</p> <p>A good combination of memory retrieval and exam skills in order to develop students at all levels of ability. Ideally this lesson would be used after teaching the functionalist and Marxist views of education, but could be tweaked and used as delivery.</p>
