**Unit Overview: **

In this unit, the unit ‘hook’ will involve introducing children to their very own “magic pencil” to spark interest. Using this pencil, they will draw what they want to bring to life. The class will then discover the story ‘Malala’s Magic Pencil’ by Malala Yousafzai, making predictions based on the book’s cover. Through shared reading sessions, pupils will learn how to infer characters’ feelings and thoughts. Engaging in discussions about ‘Malala’s’ impactful actions will involve answering inference questions. While exploring the challenges Malala faced in her upbringing, children will participate in thought-provoking conversations, respecting different viewpoints. Grammar skills for direct speech and subordinating conjunctions will be taught to express their ideas for their very own ‘wish’ for the future. A letter from Malala to her local Member of Parliament advocating for ‘universal education’ will be unpicked to recognise the features of a letter. Through collaborative planning and writing, children will draft their letter to their local representative. After editing their letter, children will orally present their vision for the future to the class.
