A Kestrel for a Knave is set in a coal-mining community in South Yorkshire in the 1960s. It tells the story of one day in the life of Billy Casper, a fifteen year old boy about to leave school. Billy’s life at home with an uncaring mother and bullying older brother is bleak. His experience of school is no brighter. The only bright spot in Billy’s life is his kestrel, Kes.
