**Tartuffe is undoubtedly the central figure of the play with Orgon being almost as significant a character. Tartuffe does not make his entrance until Act III, however his personality is felt throughout Act I. We are prepared for the hypocrite by Orgon’s comic speech wherein he describes the object of his infatuation:
