This download contains a whole lesson (including literary criticism flash cards) which introduces pupils to the concept of Literary Theory itself. Students are encouraged to think about the different values which can be used to construct and deconstruct texts, and practice these skills using an extract from J.M. Coetzee’s ‘Waiting for the Barbarians.’ I have used this with my Y12 and Y13 groups, studying for the new spec A Level in English Literature (AQA), however, it works equally as well as a springboard for encouraging MABLE Y11 groups towards the skills required to gain 8s and 9s in the new English LIterature GCSE.
