Art & Nature Unit || Week 5 of 6 || Watercolour

Week 5 of 6- A no-prep lesson that explores watercolour, the work of Paul Klee and the art of Hirameki- a Japanese doodle art! Children in years 1-3 will learn how to create a watercolor wash, emulate the work of famous artists and conduct research using internet search engines.

This product contains a 26-slide Teaching PowerPoint that guides students through previous weeks’ learning (colour theory, critiquing peers’ work, photography basics) and develops their understanding of watercolours by looking at the work of Paul Klee and the Japanese art form of Hirameki. Children will be introduced to new vocabulary such as wash, saturation, research, tone and pattern.

This activity can be conducted as a class, or in smaller wellbeing groups to work on mindfulness or calming SEN children during the chaos of the school day. The focus is on the ability to use watercolour paints in addition to improving digital literacy skills, using QR codes to conduct research on the chosen artist.

This lesson is likely to take 2-3 hours, and requires the use of worksheets (included), paintbrushes, watercolor pallets, water pots and pencils for writing. iPads to aid digital research would be beneficial but are not necessary.
