In this unit, children will embark on a journey to discover the wonders of beaches, coasts, and holidays by exploring what the seaside is and where it is located, before delving into the geography of the UK’s coastline and identifying different types of beaches. They will learn about the features of a seaside town and discover what people do at the seaside and explore the reasons why it’s a popular holiday destination. Through a case study of Weston Super Mare, students will develop their map skills and learn about the importance of this seaside town. They will also take time to explore how seasides have changed over the centuries and what life was like in the past. Finally, they will investigate beach sustainability and think critically about how we can protect our coastlines for future generations. This unit will combine geographical inquiry, research skills, and creative expression to help them develop a deeper understanding of beaches, coasts and holidays.
