Building the Liverpool and Manchester Railway

This powerpoint looks at the engineering problems faced by Stephenson when he built the Liverpool and Manchester railway. It looks at the four main obstacles he had to surmount and challenges students to come up with a solution to each. Students are then introduced to each of the real solutions that Stephenson arrived at and this can allow discussion around how these would have been built with eighteenth century technology.
