Chocolate! M&S Proof of the Pudding: KS1 Enrichment - science, chocolate, product design

A high-quality enrichment resource for KS1 pupils using the M&S Chocolate Melt in the Middle Pudding as a focus for fun, cross-curricula learning. Pupils explore the science of baking and chocolate, finding out about the functions of different ingredients. Your class will learn about the power of advertising, and design their own new dessert product. Finally, they’ll use scientific thinking to conduct a delicious taste test. Fun, creative activities provide links to speaking and listening and literacy.

Pupils will think about why this particular product is so popular, and learn about how it was developed and advertised. They will discuss the development process and what failure and success would have looked like for M&S food technologists. Working in groups they can complete a card-match task to find out about the properties of different ingredients, and there’s an optional section introducing emulsifiers with a filmed demonstration of how this ingredient works.

Pupils have the opportunity to get really creative and design their own amazing new pudding, giving it a name and labeling their designs. Then it’s time for the taste test, using scientific thinking to really analyse and evaluate the flavours and textures of the pudding.
