A reading task which looks at the Xmas poem ‘The Oxen’ by Thomas Hardy. The poem focuses on the Nativity story. The students can work through the poem stanza by stanza, looking at themes, language and structure. This lesson gives students a simplified and broken-down way of accessing the poem.

This lesson has been created specifically for Christmas themed lessons, suitable for KS3 or KS3 students. It can be used to approach the unseen poetry aspect of the GCSE poetry section.

There is a writing task which uses the poem as inspiration.

Suitable for Xmas or any other time of the year!
