The zip file contains the “1MA1.dotx” template and an example file with some questions.

Instructions

Copy questions from exam wizard (or other sources) and using the paste options select “keep text only”, paste the images after major formatting has been completed.

The “Question” style will declare the start of the question and automatically create the question number. It will also always start a question on a new page. If you don’t want this to happen (for question 1 or a page with multiple questions) go into the “paragraph” menu then select “Line and Page Breaks” and then untick “Page break before”.

The “Part” style will add the (a) part automatically. If a sub question is on the same line as the main question then part (a) will have to be skipped. Type (a) yourself at the beginning of the question and for part (b) use the style, right click and select “set numbering value” and increase the value to b. © and so on, will be automatic afterwards.

The “Blank Space” style is used to create space for the student to work. If you select the ¶ icon it will show you the returns.

The “Short Line Answer” style will move the text to the right and after pressing tab once will create a short dotted line. You can add units, simply remove the underline from those parts.

The “Long Line Answer” style after pressing tab will create a dotted line the width of the page. Press tab for each line you need.

The “Part Mark” style is done after an answer line, select the style and type ( ) and the number of parts.

The “End of Question” style will create an underline for the question and text saying “Total for Question # “ with # being automatically numbered for the question. Simply type “is x marks)”.

The “End of Paper” style is used for the TOTAL FOR PAPER IS 80 MARKS, which is in the template at the beginning and isn’t needed unless accidentally deleted.

Images should be added after formatting the text as things can move around quite a lot and cause problems. I recommend saving before adding images.

There are further instructions on the first page of the template.

Setting up as template

take the file ‘1MA1.dotx’ (which you may rename as you see fit) and drag it into the folder “Custom Office Templates” in your documents. Or simply double click the template file and it will automatically create a new document in the template. The .dotx file cannot be edited and will always create a new document.
