A reading comprehension task which looks at the traditional Xmas short story ‘The Little Match Girl’ by Hans Christian Anderson. This lesson gives students a simplified and broken-down way of accessing a fiction text.
The first part poses comprehension and language analysis activities. There are opportunities to consider contextual information, and for pupils to apply their prior knowledge to the text. The activities ensure the text is carefully read. The second part of the lesson looks at vocabulary building and writing skills. This lesson has been created specifically for Christmas themed lessons, suitable for KS3 or KS2 students.
This resource could also be suitable as contexual resource for pre reading of ‘A Christmas Carol’ or to support history lessons looking at Victorian Christmas traditions
