A. 160 Flash cards (Whole page size)
Print off and laminate the flashcards you need for your lesson.
You can display flashcards around the classroom as visual reference for the children.
B. Set of Consonant Endings Blend Cards
Small endings blend cards for small group activities.
-
Students can practise saying the graphemes and clap each letter.
-
You could ask what letters the students could put before the consonant blends to make a word. Some students might remember the flashcards you showed earlier in the lesson. For example, you can put ‘a’ before ‘ct’ to make the word ‘act’.
You can select easier cards such as ‘e’ and ‘nd’ ‘end’ or ‘o’ and ‘ld’ for old, ‘e’ and ‘lk’ for ‘elk’ or ‘lf’ for ‘elf’. -
Practise writing the graphemes on handwriting paper.
C. Set of Beginning Words Card for activity and a set of Endings Blends for activity
These are the words on the flashcards that have been separated for this activity.
Ideally laminate these cards and then cut apart.
This is a word making activity and you can choose either cursive or non-cursive cards.
Whatever level your students are at, you can select the beginning words and endings blends cards and put a selection on the tables.
Students practise making words with the selected cards.
After practising, they can list the words they have made on the Recording Worksheet.
D. 3 Ready-made making words Worksheets
There are three ready-made worksheets which replicates the above activity. The images of the two sets of cards are in separate boxes. Students choose one of the starting words in the box and the consonant ending blends in the other box in order to make a word. Students write the word out.
The last activity is to choose one word and write a sentence with it.
E. Playing a matching game
You may have to print out some beginning and endings blends more than once to make different words, e.g. be st be nd se nd. You decide on how many words you want the students to make.
Lay out a selection of beginning and ending words in to two piles face down.
1st player chooses a beginning word and an ending word, if they match to make a word he/she keeps them. If not, the player replace them back in the same position.
2nd player does the same. Winner has the most words.
