  • sign language communication
  • the evolution of communication
  • linguistics barriers

This resource is composed of a PDF and a Powerpoint which will allow to your beginner/intermediate level students to achieve several comprehension and production objectives.

How can we talk about a means of communication in a French language course?

The answer is in this educational resource which consists of 3 sequences with very precise objectives.

I. Sign language communication.

In this sequence, the students will deal with aspects of non-verbal communication. The introductory document shows a nursery with children who cannot speak, talking with signs. The aim will be to understand this original document and answer questions.

This activity is followed by 5 oral productions which are:

  • "How to communicate with": in this activity they will have to explain how it is possible to adapt their means of communication.

  • "Imposition": the aim of this speaking exercise is to justify the imposition of a means of communication depending on where you are.

  • "Why?" :The students will talk about the reasons why they use a certain means to communicate.

Let’s finish this sequence with a cooperation game.

II. The evolution of communication.

Your students will introduce this topic with an original document with an excellent introduction. It will challenge your students to make comparisons between the way we communicate in the past and the way we communicate today. The original document tells the story of communication and its multiple challenges.

After this listening, the students will be asked to compare “20 years ago VS today” in a more detailed way and also to discuss among themselves their relationship with the different means of communication.

III. Communication without borders.

The last section focuses on the benefits of speaking a foreign language. We start with a video that introduces us to a polyglot and how he became one.

As this skill sometimes creates jealousy, students will aim to understand haters’ comments and judge whether they are relevant or not. All this while justifying themselves.

They will also complete two readings related to foreign languages. Firstly, they will be asked to choose one of four languages that would be suitable for a person who wants to experience different cultures in different continents. Secondly, they will have to read an article that explains how to prepare for traveling to a country where they do not speak the language.

As always, this sheet ends with a vocabulary sheet and a writing exercise.

All corrections and transcripts are also available.
