The includes a set of haikus so that children can use inference to work out what each haiku is about while learning the form of a haiku poem. This meets the DfE statement that children should discuss a wide range of poetry.

During the teacher session, the teacher and group should discuss the rules of haiku poems, poetic devices and the children’s inferences.

The post read questions focus on closed questions about the devices and rules, with some inference questions, and include a question about tanka poems so that children can reach the next level of challenge by putting what they have learned about the forms of poetry to the test.

Children love the ‘guessing’ format of the pre read questions, and it is an excellent way to make inference fun.

This comes with an editable Publisher file and a PDF.
This could be used at any point in KS2 as an introduction to a form of poetry, but is best suited for Year 4 onwards due to the level of challenge.
