This PowerPoint lesson explores Hardy’s poem The Man He Killed in detail, establishing Hardy’s background, the context to the poem (the 2nd Boer War) and Hardy’s position with regard to military history, contemporary warfare and poetic jingoism. The language of the poem is examined, especially in the light of Hardy’s Wessex novels’ focus on the ordinary people of the countryside, as is the choice of form. Structural features are scrutinised and linked to possible purpose, with particular focus given to the third stanza. The lesson sets several class tasks as well as a suggestion for a creative response (to aid understanding the craft of the writer). It closes with two exam-style questions suitable for students undertaking the OCR or Edexcel GCSE courses followed by some helpful hints to aid with constructing a comparative approach in their responses. 21 slides.
