A critical reading lesson using chapter 1 of Holes. The lesson was written for an intervention lesson but could also be used for a lower ability class. The lesson encourages careful and slow reading; a look at vocabulary; zooming in of specific words and sentences to help with general understanding and then a longer writing task looking at how the author conveys the atmosphere. Included is also the worksheet which my pupils do their writing on.
