This PowerPoint lesson guides the class through the background to the situation that opens Act 1 scene 1 of Julius Caesar. The context to the performance of the play is considered briefly as are the key elements of tragedy, Shakespeare’s use of sources and the possible tensions in contemporary politics being reflected against the backdrop of Rome. Act 1 scene 1 itself is analysed, with some time spent comparing the prose of the citizens with the blank verse of the tribunes. Imagery, rhetoric and punning and unpacked.
