I used this resource as follows: Students are given 18 newspaper headlines in German, alongside a picture. There are 6 headlines per envelope, so 3 envelopes in total. The content of the envelopes ranges in difficulty: one is easy, the next medium and the third challenging.
Students work in small groups to translate the recent (2016) newspaper headlines into English and score points for their translations. Points are awarded by the teacher who circulates the classroom and checks translations. 'Easy' headlines are worth one point, medium two points and challenging three points - these points all correspond to chilli images on the headlines. The more challenging headlines have some subtext, to enable them to do more than just read for gist.
The headlines cover sport, media and entertainment, so there is something for everyone!
