Pupils are given a set of molecule cards and a selection of Carbon and Proton NMR spectrum. Pupils need to match up the cards to their respective spectrum. Pupils must be prepared to explain their choice. This activity could be done as a timed starter activity whereby pupils must get rid of a molecule card every 20 seconds. Pupils will be able to complete this activity after completion of the following objectives.

The comprehensive analysis of carbon-13 NMR spectrum of organic molecules to make accurate prediction about;
a. the number of carbon environments in the molecule
b. the different types of carbon environment present, from chemical shift values
c. the possible structures for the molecule

The comprehensive analysis of high resolution proton NMR spectrum of an organic molecule to make accurate predictions about;
a. the number of proton environment in the molecule
b. the different types of proton environment present, from chemical shift values
c. the number of non-equivalent protons adjacent to a given proton from the spin-spin splitting patterns, using the n + 1 rule
d. possible structures for the molecule

Prediction of a carbon-13 or proton NMR spectrum for a given molecule.
