The presentation builds on the preceding “OCR MEI Statistics 2 : Normal Distribution Intro” presentation to
- demonstrate working back from a probability back to a test score, given mu and sigma
- find mu and sigma using simultaneous equations given a pair of test scores and associated probabilities
- use the Normal with continuity corrections to find probabilities for discrete variables
- use the Normal as an approximating distribution for the Poisson and for the Binomial
Included with the presentation are a ‘starter’ task sheet that looks back to the previous lesson (and extends forward into this one), a flowchart exercise to help students understand the conditions under which all of the distributions so far encountered can be used, and a sheet that summarises ‘exam formalities’, ie. how to lay-out the start of an exam answer in order not to lose any marks on “the basics”.
