How successful was Elizabeth I at maintaining order?

This lesson looks at the Oxfordshire Rising 1596 and the Essex Rebellion 1601. This includes:

  • Retrieval task starter
  • Background to the Oxfordshire Rising, including social issues within England at the time
  • Events of the rebellion
  • Fate of the rebels and why Elizabeth took such a harsh approach to this very small rising
  • Fact files on Robert Devereux and Robert Cecil
  • Contextual information to explain the events surrounding the Essex Rebellion (including Elizabeth’s age, death of key advisors, war with Spain, social and economic problems))

Also included is detailed planning for the following exam question: Why were there so few disturbances in Elizabethan England compared with the period from 1485 to 1558? (25 marks)
