An engaging, tried-and-tested lesson that helps students to develop their thinking, reading, and writing skills for GCSE English Language (or Functional Skills English) by exploring a particular, tangible thing they would like to get rid of to improve life in the 21st century.

The lesson’s main task is creative non-fiction writing, requiring the learners to write an interesting article for a news and entertainment website (guidelines provided), but the lesson’s PowerPoint also features a number of starter activities covering lateral thinking, commas, identifying unusual creatures, and ‘slow writing’. The theme of the lesson is likely to prompt plenty of discussion and brainstorming of ideas, too.
