Our World and Where we Live with Symbols

“Our World and Where We Live,” encourages children to explore and appreciate their local environment and culture, and promotes understanding and empathy of others by facilitating comparison and discussion of diverse global environments and cultures.

The resource includes a complete lesson plan including aims, resources, activities, assessment and homework. There is a colour disucssion sheet to introduce different aspects of where we live and the local environment. Children can colour in the black and white version of this sheet and overwrite the sentences. The next worksheet asks the children to draw and write about the different aspects and an example sheet is provided that the children can use as a reference or stimulus.

The Boardmaker symbols can be a great resource for SEND students. They are a set of picture symbols used for communication with individuals who are nonverbal, have limited speech or who benefit from pictorial / visual input. They can aid in understanding and expressing ideas around the topic of Our World and where we live.
