A short phonics session on digraph ou - phase 5

• Starts off with a quick recap of the split digraphs (this can be taken out for later learning)
• Next slide features a timer used for a quick recap of learnt phonemes
• It then moves onto HFW.
• The following slide allows the children to read the words by segmenting and then blending (with the aid of sound buttons).
• Next the children are required to sort the words into real words and alien words (i.e. nonsense words).
  *Make up silly words (using the phonemes and phoneme frame) for children to segment and blend
• Finally ask the children to read the sentence to apply their knowledge.

TIP: you can extend your lesson by providing the children an opportunity to write some of the words using their phonics skills.
