This maths resource relates to place value: tens and ones. Please note it is a hands on resource and the lesson plan should be used in conjunction with the presentations as there is a lesson starter presentation.

It can be used for reviewing tens and ones or teaching it from scratch, so the detailed lesson plan is flexible.

Some preparation is needed to carry out the activities such as collection of different coloured straws, elastic bands, suggested materials such as counters, unifix cubes; cut out the 1 digit number tiles for the worksheet or you can get children to select two numbers from a pile, write it down and then describe the place value - see 5. in the list below.

This product contains:

  1. Lesson Starter PowerPoint Presentation - Counting in tens from 0 to 100 and back. Also included is the Hundred Square if you need to demonstrate counting in steps or groups of 10.

  2. Main Lesson PowerPoint Presentation (50 Slides) together with lesson plan

  3. Detailed Lesson Plan (Presentation slides are referred to)- Includes whole class and independent activities.

  4. Place Value Grids - tens/ones and tens/units - for practical activities

  5. Blank Place Value Grid

  6. Worksheet and Cut/paste activity sheets for making 2-digit numbers.
Children choose a 1 -digit number from container 1 and another 1-digit number from container 2 to make a 2-digit number which they stick onto their worksheet and describe the number, e.g. 35 = 3 tens 5 ones; 30 + 5.

Children are taken through step-by-step of what a 2-digit number stands for and why we need zero.

Independent work is differentiated.

Hope you enjoy this resource.
