A lesson looking at alliteration in poetry resulting in the children creating their own alliterative animal poem. Originally made for a mixed-ability Year 4 class, but could easily be adapted for the years above and below. Links well to topics on animals, especially rainforest animals.
The lesson includes a starting activity which reminds pupils of the purpose of adjectives, verbs and nouns. It continues to look at an example of an alliterative animal poem to help elicit the pupils’ own ideas about what alliteration means. The class then work together to come up with alliterative words to describe and animal and apply this to whiteboard work, before selecting an appropriate challenge and writing their own poem.
Resource includes:
- Lesson slides in Powerpoint format.
- Lined templates for writing up poems in neat.
- Example alliterative poem to inspire structure and ideas.
