There are only 60 answers to all 156 multiplication questions ranging from 0 X 0 to 12 X 12.
Steve’s Multiplication Sieve is based on those 60 answers.
By significantly reducing the number of possible answers, students can more easily identify (and learn) the correct answers.
They can do this by combining (and developing) their skills of estimation and understanding of number value. In other words, they can face a question, refer to the 60 possible answers revealed by the “sieve” and then deduce what is more likely to be correct.
The word “sieve” in mathematical terms refers to numbers derived from specified parameters. The sieve of Eratosthmenes is famous for finding prime numbers.
