This resource is designed to be used with a class who already know the AQA Power and Conflict anthology poems well. The intention is to give students the tools and understanding to analyse the structure of the poems at the highest levels.
Benefits to teacher: The resource contains a slide for each poem, outlining the most significant structural components of the poem along with high-level analysis.
Lesson structure:
- Quiz re-cap of key structural techniques and effects (ceasura, enjambment, full/half/eye rhyme, iambic pentametre, ABAB rhyme scheme, dactylic metre etc.)
- Students complete an ‘audit’ sheet for each of the 15 poems in the anthology, identifying the structural techniques used.
- Students are given the most relevant key structural features from each poem and must consider multiple interpretations of the effects.
- Students are shown the answers and reflect upon/improve their own interpretations.
This lesson culminates in students having a workpack revision resource that they can use to revise structure for each poem.
